Types of watches and their movements

The watch is a classic timepiece that is used for a functional purpose or as a jewelry accessory. There are many different styles and types of watches, the most common being the wrist watch. The watch is often used as a way to defy classification, for example a man with a Rolex watch would be considered a wealthy man. Watches can also add personality with different styles for different people, a digital watch can be considered as ‘geek' and a designer watch can be considered as a ‘flash' or fashion statement.
There are three main types of watch; analog, digital and mechanical. The most popular of these being analog and digital watches. Digital, otherwise known as the electronic watch, is the most inexpensive type of watch and is mostly used as a functional timepiece and is popular for its practical use.
The analog watch is the most expensive and considered luxury watch, analog watches are often collectable items and are worth a lot of money. They are valued for their workmanship, fine detail and aesthetic appeal rather than for simple time keeping. Ironically analog watches are less accurate and more expensive than digital quartz movement watches.
The mechanical watch is the least accurate of all the watches as the sweeping second hand often looses seconds in a day. It is however, a very desirable style to watch-buying collectors and enthusiasts.
Along with the three types of watch there are many different styles including; dress watch, sports watch, designer and jewelry watch. Dress watches tend to be steel or gold plated, and inexpensive.
Sports watches would generally be digital and include special features such as water resistance and LED lighting. Sports watches are used for function and used by divers and pilots.
Designer watches are for image, accessory and high quality purposes. Rather than a functional simple timepiece a designer watch is created with fine materials, often gold or diamonds and is considered a precious time accessory.
Jewelry watches often have a hidden face and can be either analog or digital. Jewelry watches are more of a fashion accessory rather than an efficient timepiece; they can be a range of different prices from inexpensive to highly priced containing precious metals or stones.
